Arrowtarian Residents Garden

Picture
In Nakusp, BC, the Arrowtarian Senior Citizens Society has cultivated more than just vegetables — they’ve grown a thriving community project. The Arrowtarian Residents Garden, made possible by a grant obtained from CBT Seniors' Housing Livability Improvement Grant, provided several raised garden beds exclusively for residents' use, each pre-filled with top-quality topsoil and compost. Every individual or couple is given their own plot, free of charge, to grow whatever they like for their personal use.
Residents apply for a garden bed each year through the Arrowtarian management office in early spring, ensuring everyone has a fair opportunity to participate. The initiative has been enthusiastically embraced, with residents taking full ownership of planting, tending, and harvesting their beds. From fresh herbs and colourful flowers to a bounty of vegetables, each garden reflects the personality and preferences of its caretaker.
Not only does the project provide fresh produce and a sense of accomplishment, but it also enhances the beauty of the Arrowtarian grounds, creating a vibrant and welcoming space for all to enjoy. By combining practical support with a sense of independence, the Arrowtarian Residents Garden is proof that community spaces can nourish both body and spirit — and brighten the neighbourhood in the process.
